Marking the restart of school netball tournaments, the Super 16 Schools’ Netball Championship organized by the Sri Lanka Schools Netball Association under the guidance of the Ministry of Education, was held on the 12th of June 2022, at the Buddhadasa Stadium in Battaramulla.
This contest was the first event held at an inter-school level, as all competitions were on hold for two years due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
In 2019, the Sri Lanka Schools Netball Tournament featured Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Dharamapala Vidyalaya Pannipitiya, Dharamasoka College Ambalangoda, Girls’ High School Kandy, Gothami Balika Vidyalaya Colombo, Helena Wijewardana Balika Vidyalaya Kelaniya, Hillwood College, Holy Family Convent Kalutara, Holy Family Convent Kurunegala, Kalutara Balika Vidyalaya, Ladies College, Maliyadeva Balika Vidyalaya Kurunegala, Musaeus College, Presbyterian Girls’ National College Dehiwala, Sacred Heart Convent Galle, and Visakha Vidyalaya Colombo. The Super 16 Schools' Netball Championship saw 300 skilled participants from these 16 schools competing against each other in 2022.
After the final battle between Holy Family Convent Kurunegala and Musaeus College, the Holy Family Convent Kurunegala clinched the championship while Musaeus College emerged as the runners up. Hiruni Heshani from Holy Family Convent Kurunegala was named the most outstanding player of the tournament, and Bhashi Udagedara of the same school was awarded the best shooter. The best Centre court player title was won by Nethasha Dias from Holy Family Convent Kurunegala, while Nethanga Gunarathne from Musaeus College was named as the best defender.
The Super 16 Schools’ Netball Championship was held under the sponsorship of Nestlé MILO as part of its promise to develop ground-level sports in Sri Lanka.
